With a commitment to making downtown an attractive place to live, work and visit, the St. Joseph Downtown Community Improvement District provides maintenance of the Gateway Park, planting of the planters scattered throughout the district and trash pick-up.
Making downtown pedestrian-friendly contributes to the revitalization of the district. With this objective in mind, the St. Joseph Downtown Community Improvement District sponsors the Sculpture Walk downtown. This program, facilitated by the Allied Arts Council, brings in new sculptures from artists across the United States to display their work. At the end of the year, the council selects a sculpture to purchase and add to their permanent collection. All pieces are available for purchase by private individuals.

The St. Joseph Downtown Community Improvement District funds a grant program to promote property rehabilitation.
The St. Joseph Downtown Community Improvement provided $14,000 to help fund the “Paint the Town!” downtown mural project. The concept for a large mural downtown was devised several years ago by the St. Joseph Downtown Partnership. In 2012, the Downtown Partnership partnered with the River City Development Committee to devise a theme and begin fundraising for the project. The theme of western migration was chosen. The St. Joseph Downtown Partnership engaged mural artist Sam Welty of Chesapeake, Virginia to paint the mural. Mr. Welty was chosen because of his expertise in painting large murals in numerous other cities. His drawings depicted the spirit and adventure of our community’s unique historic past.
